On 11/10/2008 at 11:58 AM we were blessed with the arrival of our beautiful baby girl Eva Carey Hajjar. She was delivered by Dr. Brian Heyman at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, MD. We originally planned for a vaginal delivery, but Eva chose to wrap her umbilical cord around her neck twice. The end result was an emergency C-section. On the bright side, at least Sarah won't have to endure hours of labor again for our next baby. Sarah was having enough of labor anyway. She had been enduring nasty, excruciatingly painful and tortuous contractions for the past 4 days.
Eva weighed in at 6 pounds, 2 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long.

As soon as Eva was cleaned up after her birth, the anesthesiologist was kind enough to take our first family picture. The scrubs I had to wear were supposedly "one size fits all" but in reality, I had to be wrapped up in sterile garments because I could not zip the scrubs together. My wife was in the process of being hauled away to the OR while I was trying to get each leg into the scrubs.

Eva had been born for less than an hour and already we find she is being finicky! I politely reminded her that should she indeed bite her fingers off, they would not grow back. I took the next few shots of Eva in the nursery. I then remembered I was still wearing the scrubs but I was allowed to remove them. Shockingly enough, Eva didn't freak out when she saw daddy's face.

As anyone who knows us knows, we have a bit of a zoo at home which includes a few reptiles, which won't be anywhere near our baby. I couldn't help but notice that Eva was "sniffing" things the same way our reptiles would. I wonder how she picked that particular habit up?

I took these pictures in the post-partum room at FMH.

People ask me... why the name Eva Carey? Prior to her birth, I insisted on having "Carey" as our baby's middle name because I wanted to acknowledge Sarah's mother's ties to members of the Carey family that came to what would become the USA on board the Mayflower in 1620. As for "Eva," that was on our "short list" of names that we were considering, but it came to be the "correct" name for her because of something silly that happened to me in the OR. One of the nurses was asking for my name. As I had done for the past three decades, I didn't say "Philippe," but rather, I spelled "P-H-I-L ..." and then it hit me. I don't want my kid to have to do that for the rest of her life (may God grant her many years), so, "Eva" it was. Oh and Sarah agreed too.
We want to thank the entire staff of Capital Women's Care in Frederick, along with the staff of FMH Birth Place, for making this process as straightforward as can be. The entire staff was supremely competent and quite experienced. I'd recommend them to anyone having a baby and we will most definitely go with them again in the future.
We want to thank God that baby and mommy are healthy and happy and that we were able to gain the wisdom needed to do as much of this correctly as possible.
