Roadside America

Day Three - 12/21/2003
Dallas, TX to Deming, NM

Only 600 Miles to El Paso! We left Dallas on I-30 West. Beyond Fort Worth, I-30 merged with I-20. This place is mostly desert. You can't help but notice that the Colorado River is but a little trickle as we crossed it for the first time on I-20 West. Most of the towns with exits along I-20 in this area had to have been at most a single block long!

Hey Christi, check out where we stopped for gas!

Somewhere east of Midland, the three wise guys, bearing nothing but trouble,
from the left, Phil, Kevin and Phong, with Phil working on this very web-page :)

Ok, so not all of the towns along I-20 west of Dallas are 2 blocks long! This has to be the first time in my life I have seen a completely cloudless sky!

Greetings from Midland!

This sure seems like an odd place to put a city!

The oddest thing about Western Texas was the amazing number of people being pulled over by cops. We look all around and we can't figure out where these coppers are hiding. I have to really give some credit to the Texas State Police for literally being able to hide in the middle of nowhere. Oh well, Phong's Civic is so weighed down we can't possibly exceed the speed limit :)

Tourist Trap Alert!

This has to be only reason to stop here that isn't service-related!

Damn... we had to make this an educational trip! Offically, the place was closed, but that didn't stop us!

Looks like Phong found a booby-trap.

Meteor crater? It looks more like a man-made ditch... but what the heck, we'll take their word for it! And heck, its better than Graceland!

Shots from the Odessa Meteor Crater

Hey! Let's tell everyone this is the meteor!

Learning Stuff...

Oops... looks like we missed an important safety tip!

We had to cut our educational diversion short so that we wouldn't miss what has to be the most beautiful sight in all of Texas...

A truly beautiful sunset...

Once the sun set, we continued through past El Paso and into New Mexico. The one thing we noticed going into El Paso on I-10 West was the city of Juarez, Mexico. This place literally sprawls along the border way before you even see El Paso.

Juarez, Mexico, as seen from a Wal-Mart in El Paso.

One thing we couldn't help notice was that in this particular Wal-Mart, there were actually a lot of vehicles that were registered in Mexico parked there with us. The image on the license plate from the Mexican state of Chihuahua looks like 2 people running across the border. :) Must be the national pastime or something like that.
