Roadside America

Day Eight - 12/26/2003
Southern California

As we crossed from Nevada into California, we found yet more interesting roadside traps...

Ripoff Alert!

We had the unfortunate luck of having to buy gas in Baker, CA off of I-15 south. As you can see, gas prices in this dump weren't exactly a bargain.

So this is how they pay for the thermometer...

Here's a tip for anyone driving into California, get gas in a bordering state first! Gas prices did drop to more reasonable levels once we got past Barstow, however, with all the extra load on Phong's car, we had to get gas twice in the area of I-15 and I-40 north and east of Barstow. And no, the Vaseline wasn't on sale either!

Say this 3 times fast!

There was a fair amount of stop and go traffic on I-15 south towards Los Angeles. We found out that this was the cause of that traffic. The inspection station was closed today however.

I wonder if they took bribes ;)

As we continued, night fell and we almost missed this wonderful site below... the sunset over the mountains. Thank Phong and his quick shooting (while driving) for this shot!

Another beautiful scene...

Upland, California, where one of my uncles lives, was the end of the line for me. Phong and Kevin dropped me off there and then continued on to Monterrey Park. It was good for us to both spend time with our families. This has to rank as one of the best experiences I have ever had, and I hope I can do it again soon. The scenery, weather and of course the fun I had with my family made it all worth it. It felt so strange for me to wear a T-Shirt in early winter. My only regret is that I did not bring a pair of shorts!

Unfortunately, all good things have to come to an end sometime, and on the night of the 1st we headed back home to the East. No scenic stops or other touristy things for this one, it was just I-40 East all the way from Barstow, CA to Eastern Tennessee back to I-81 North towards DC. Of course, I still had 3 more hours of driving from DC back to Philadelphia!
