Day 1 - 09-10-2005

Ideally, we had wanted to pack up and leave right on Friday night but with the nuttiness going on during the shortened work week, that did not happen.

Normally we don't take very many pictures of Pennsylvania on trips like these because we usually leave at night, but we have 2 exceptions to this rule :)

Sarah in Charge...
Sarah's Endurance Driving A Mountain off of The Pennsylvania Turnpike

Not too long down the road from here (this was near Breezewood), we saw electricity generating windmills. I had no idea we have these in Pennsylvania! I did not think it got that windy in this state. We would see more of these further down the road.

After we entered Ohio via the Interstate 76. We needed to hit a rest stop. The first silly thing I noticed was the following sign:

Rats, and I needed to reload!
Can we still smoke?

The one thing I hated the most about the Ohio Turnpike and Indiana Toll Roads is the lack of EZ-Pass support. These toll agencies really need to get into the 21st Century and support automatic toll collection!

We saw a very interesting site at an Indiana rest stop. A family of birds decided to build a nest in the McDonald's sign at the rest stop.

They're Loving it 3?

Lets hope these are not the contents of the all white meat chicken nuggets :)

Night fell upon us in Indiana. The sunset wasn't as spectacular as it was in Texas, but it was a nice sunset nonetheless.

It's too bad we did not get to the Chicago area during the day, if we had, I would had many more pictures than we have here. We drove through the city and stopped at the Des Plaines Oasis for a late dinner and fuel. Interstate 90 near Chicago has some very "baroque" rest stops which were quite amazing!

Considering the gas prices we had gotten accustomed to back home, the prices we saw for gas right outside of Chicago were surprisingly low... this must have been the first time I had seen gas under $3 a gallon (albeit barely) in weeks... ugh.

Wow What a Bargain!...
Cheap Gas in Illinois!

The Des Plaines "Oasis" (service plaza) is built literally on top of Interstate 90. Here are some shots of the highway from inside the Oasis.

While the Illinois Tollway did not (yet) support EZ-Pass, they at least had their own automated toll collection system called IPass. Thankfully they do plan to support EZ-Pass in the near future! But paying tolls by hand still sucks!

This is one hell of a rest stop!

From Chicago we continued on Interstate 90 West into Wisconsin and then into Southern Minnesota. It was at this point I ended up stopping at a rest stop at Blue Earth, MN and slept for the night.
