Day 3 - Part 2 - 09-12-2005

After exploring Mount Rushmore, we went further down the road to the Crazy Horse Memorial. The memorial is off of an appropriately named street:

Intersection of US 16/385 and Avenue of the Chiefs
Avenue of the Chiefs

Here are some shots of the Memorial from afar. These shots hope to capture the size and scope of this Memorial. The rock is over 560 feet high. This is taller than the Washington Monument and the Pyramids at Giza in Egypt.

Below are some photos showing what the part of the sculpture will look like when it is completed. The Memorial itself is right behind the sculpture beyond the wooden column in the middle of the photo.

There was a lot of Native American-crafted art on display in the Visitor's Center but the one piece below really caught my attention.

There was another room in which the flags of many different Native American nations hung from the ceiling. The Seminole flag stuck out because I remember we stopped on their land in Florida a few years back.

Outside of the Visitor's Center is another "miniature" statue depicting what the Memorial will look like. This statue has more details than the one above, including the poem which will be carved into the rock.

As we were about to leave the Memorial, we snapped a single closeup of the top of the rock:

A view of the head.

At this point it was time to continue west towards Yellowstone National Park with a slight detour through Montana. We headed back up US 16 to Rapid City and picked up I-90 and continued West. We didn't think there would be much to see here but as usual, we were proven wrong...
